Sunday May 29

I left this afternoon in search of the Apache key and to find out if there was a bed kit at my parents. Yes to the key, no to the bed kit.

While I was away, Marc mounted the steering column and brake booster. He also attached the brake and gas pedals. Now one of the most complicated parts of this conversion is complete.

Saturday May 28

It doesn't look like we got very far on the car today, at least not at first glance. Marc completed a major milestone when he removed the cab brackets from the 58 chassis and welded them onto the 1982 chassis. I was merely errand girl today, getting bolts, a better light, and a much needed 7Up.

I did get the chance today to take artistic welding photos. At the end of the night we were able to move the truck with the new steering column attached. Tomorrow we will address how to get the steering column and brakes from the new truck to work and fit in the old cab.

Friday May 27

I'm starting to feel like we're on the set of Overhauling, but without the crazy budget and army of people on the car rebuild. It's been nearly a week since we brought the Apache home. We've managed to remove the Apache body from the old chassis, remove the 1982 truck from its chassis and test fit the 58 body on the "new" chassis. It's amazing how much better the truck looks from a week ago. Even more amazing, it's only been a week.

Thursday May 26

Thursday Marc took the cab off of the 1982 Chevy. We also swapped out the tires and rims for the Cragar rims that came with our 1970 Charger.

Wednesday May 25

Wednesday would however more than make up for Tuesday's lack of car work. I came home from work to this:

Marc removed the donor truck's bed and pulled it into the garage. It was raining all day Wednesday and he couldn't work outside. He was labeling the wires in the engine compartment. I made fun of him for this one:

He was nearly as amused as I was. By the end of the evening, most of the body had been removed from the 1982 Chevy.

Tuesday May 24

Tuesday was the oldest child's 8th Grade promotion. This and the weather prevented any car progress today.

Monday May 23

Today we took the cab off of the chassis. This proved to be more challenging physically than mechanically. We also picked up the donor truck. The plan is to take the 1958 body and put it on the 1982 chevy chassis. The newer chassis already has a 350 installed, is lowered and has some other updates done that we won't have to do. Next will be dismantling the newer chevy and figuring out how to get the old cab and bed to fit.

Sunday May 22

The disassembly begins. Eventually the 58 Cab will be put on an a more modern Chevy truck chassis. The first steps are to get the cab off of the old chassis.

Saturday May 21

The Apache came to our house today.

The beginning-ish

Many years ago, my parents bought a 1958 Chevy Apache. They drove it for awhile, then it sat behind the garage.
Tomorrow we will venture to my parents and bring it to our house. Where eventually through much work, it will be a gleaming machine again instead of, as my mother phrased it, a drift fence.
